Writing with Design - A Digital Platform for Teachers by Teachers

Chelsea Sauder • May 07, 2020

Behind every great doctor, innovator, and contributor to society has been a cadre of teachers helping them reach their potential. Educators are the backbone of community success, and for Teacher Appreciation Week we are featuring, Writing with Design (WwD), an innovative writing-based approach to literacy built by teachers for teachers. TexasPGB has been a proud technology partner with WwD, working with their team to further enhance their digital solutions. Supported by an interactive platform, WwD marries technology solutions with a results-driven curriculum to make writing doable, interesting, and surprisingly fun for students.

Writing with Design Statistics

Launched in 2010 by former educator Amber Parks, Writing With Design (WwD), revolutionizes the way students cultivate writings skills. As the preeminent prek-12 writing program, WwD has helped over 10,000 students across the United States successfully develop the necessary life skill of writing.

So what makes Writing With Design so revolutionary?

In a phrase:“Quality matters more than quantity.”

During a recent discussion, Parks pointed out a major flaw in writing curriculum – lack of structure. “If you apply the way writing is typically taught to other subjects, you can begin to see why writing feels so overwhelming and confusing: A math teacher would never ask students to take out a piece of paper and ‘just math for 20 minutes.’ So why do we think this is the way writing should be taught? At WwD, we believe there is nothing more intimidating than a blank sheet of paper and the instructions, ‘Write.’”

WwD’s program flips preconceived notions about length and structure of writing on its head and focuses much more on quality of content instead of quantity of sentences. Parks states, “…the program doesn’t take away creativity, it just gives students a scaffold. The framework and structure unlock creativity for students.”

“Every time students write it should be worth your time
to read it and their time to write it”
- Amber Parks
To help support both educators and students, WwD offers their curriculum, assessments, rubrics, and writing prompts on a digital platform. “Our software is a vital pillar of Writing With Design, allowing schools to mimic high-stakes assessments in a low-stakes environment. This is incredibly important, since students are not just being assessed on their writing skills, but also on digital literacy skills," Parks shared. WwD's software provides much needed opportunities for students to learn and practice a myriad of college and career skills.

The entire program includes:
WRITING TYPES
Detailed writing types teach the steps, structures, and stylistic components of all writing types found in the 3 domains.
CRITERIA
Comprehensive scoring criteria address conventions and content to make revision and future instruction purposeful.
WRITING LEVELS
Ten levels of writing guide your students from one-sentence responses to multi-paragraph essays.
MIND DESIGNS
Our Mind Designs support your students in planning any length and type of writing.
STAGES OF INSTRUCTION
By gradually increasing your students’ autonomy as writers through three stages of instruction, you’ll know they have the skills to compose with quality.
TIERS OF WRITER GROWTH
Our three-tier growth system scaffolds students’ growth with specialized resources that advance with them.
As shown above, the WwD program consists of thirteen comprehensive evaluation criteria that apply to all three domains – opinion/argumentative, informational, and narrative. Teaching guides, ready-to-use activities, and rubrics demystify the art of writing for students and teachers alike. Building on their focus of quality over quantity, one of the most intriguing applications of the WwD writing program is the mini essay, an essay that is only six sentences total, that gives students the understanding of how to structure and organize multi-paragraph writings. Parks explains,“When students master the Level 6 essay, they know how to plan writings, which means they now understand what it takes to write lengthier pieces. By making length the least important aspect of writing, teachers do not get overwhelmed by the amount of revision students' writing needs.”

Coming from an educator background, the team at WwD understands that a program is only as effective as the user experience for both the students and the teachers. To provide an optimum user experience WwD partnered with technology experts and educators to create a digital environment for teachers and students to collaborate on their writing journey.

For the students: Once logged in, students are able to complete writing assignments, review their scores for past writings, and complete activities to work on areas of focus pointed out by their rubric scores.

For the teachers: When using the WwD platform, teachers can easily coordinate and track assignments based on classroom and individual student needs. In addition, the ever-growing library of online activities and writing prompts allows teachers to provide one-on-one customized instruction and work on improving writing skill sets, one engaging activity at a time.
Real-Time Analytics

Whether it is in a professional or educational environment, success is all in the numbers. The initial data for WwD was tracked in excel spreadsheets without the flexibility of cloud reporting. Supported by our team at TexasPGB, the WwD platform now enables teachers and administrators to analyze key performance indicators from the individual student level up to the entire school. Through robust analytic tools, teachers can compare writing growth of individual students, subgroups, and even entire grade levels.
The platform also provides analytics across student demographics to identify underserved populations in terms of instruction, especially English Language Learners (ELL) and Long Term English Language Learners (LTEL). In a recent case study at three California middle schools, passing ELL student assessment scores increased on average from 15% to 68% between the fall and spring when utilizing Writing With Design. Their rates of reclassification of LTEL’s increased by 23%.

The best feature about the WwD digital platform is that it is a living solution. Parks and the WwD team are constantly collaborating with technology partners, like TexasPGB, and educators to identify new features that can enhance the adoption rate and usability of the platform. Moving forward, Parks and her team want to further leverage technology to provide a scalable solution to schools all around the United States.

TexasPGB is proud to be a supporter of the Writing With Design platform and encourage all educators to learn more about this revolutionary literacy program.

When it comes to automating processes around your business, it can simultaneously seem like everything can be automated, and absolutely nothing can be automated. As with many other things, the real answer is somewhere in the middle but can be a bit challenging to put your finger on. These projects usually start when someone at the strategic level of the organization has decreed that “we are going to automate!” and either they personally go on the hunt for what to automate or they hand it off to someone on their team to go do the leg work and come back with “automation” (maybe in a nice box with a bow on it). Sound familiar?

Top Tips on How to Use Microsoft PowerBI to Avoid Data Overload
By Patrick Boren 19 Nov, 2020
Having a wealth of data at your fingertips is great, but what happens when your data is so vast that it takes you years to make a key discovery? A friend of mine told me a story recently about an experience he had. His first company conducted a VP meeting every quarter – everyone scrambling to put together their presentations and make their case based on the data from Excel spreadsheets. Departments and information tended to be segmented into silos. While much of the data could be shared across the company, rarely was it compiled in a way to show how one area of the business could affect another.
Solution Design SharePoint vs Common Data Service
By Patrick Boren 12 Nov, 2020
If you are looking to migrate your data to Microsoft 365 there are two common methods to funnel your data - SharePoint or Common Data Service (CDS). SharePoint solutions take advantage of lists and libraries. Data is housed, originated, and manipulated entirely within the SharePoint platform. CDS solutions use both standard and custom entities to collect and house data that is then integrated across the Microsoft 365 platform. Below we will review a few ways each method is different and what you should look for before making a final decision for your data migration plan.
How managed service providers and technology consultants are different and why you need both
By Patrick Boren 15 Sep, 2020
When it comes to technology, do you have a one-size-fits-all vendor? In today’s world of cost cutting, we see more and more organizations that end up missing out on huge technology opportunities by assuming a single vendor can and will do it all. As a technology consulting firm, we’re frequently asked “aren’t you the same as my managed service provider (MSP)?” Fortunately, for those that ask, we’re able to shed light on how a Technology Consulting Firm varies from an MSP.
